Q: How do I adopt a dog?
A: Complete an adoption application provided below, participate in a screening process, and meet the dog. If approved, you will finalize the adoption agreement and adoption fee.
Q: How much is the adoption fee, and what is included?
A: The adoption fee at LHR Foster and Rescue is $300 and helps cover:
- Spay/neuter surgery
- Vaccinations
- Microchipping
- Heartworm testing
- Flea and tick prevention
- Veterinary care while in rescue
Q: Why do you charge an adoption fee?
A: Adoption fees offset only a very small portion of the costs associated with rescuing and caring for dogs. For example, the average cost of Medina dog neutering alone is $250 and spays average more than twice that cost.
Q: Can I meet a dog before adopting?
A: Yes. Approved applicants are typically are required to meet the dog through a scheduled meet-and-greet at least once before being released.
Q: Do you adopt outside your local area?
A: This depends on individual circumstances such as being a repeat adopter, partner vetted recommendation, and more.
Q: Can I adopt if I rent my home?
A: Yes, provided pets are permitted by your landlord, any breed or size restrictions are met, and most importantly, that it is the best fit for the dog. For example, dachshunds are prone to back issues where stairs would exeserbate the problem, in this case it would not be a good fit.
Q: How long does the adoption process take?
A: Timeframes vary, but applications are generally reviewed within several days to a week.
Q: What if the adoption doesn't work out?
A: We require adopters to return the dog to our rescue rather than rehome the dog independently.
