Longhound Ranch Mission Overview
The Longhound Ranch serves as a vital bridge between overcrowded municipal shelters and forever homes. By focusing on dachshunds and small breeds—who often struggle the most in loud, high-stress environments—the ranch provides a specialized sanctuary tailored to their unique physical and emotional needs.
The Mission Statement
"To provide a specialized sanctuary for dachshunds and small-breed dogs in Medina County and surrounding areas, rescuing them from high-risk shelter environments and providing the dedicated foster care, rehabilitation, and advocacy necessary to lead them to their permanent homes."
Core Pillars of Our Mission
To achieve this goal, Longhound Ranch focuses on four primary objectives:
- Rescue and Intervention: Actively monitoring "kill" lists and shelter capacity in Medina County to pull vulnerable small dogs before their time runs out.
- Tailored Rehabilitation: Recognizing that "small" doesn't mean "simple." We provide breed-specific care, addressing common issues like IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) in dachshunds and anxiety in toy breeds.
- Community Integration: Expanding our network of local foster homes to ensure every dog experiences the warmth of a household rather than the cold of a kennel.
- Advocacy and Education: Teaching the community about the importance of spaying/neutering and the specific joys (and challenges) of owning small-stature breeds.
Our Values
| Value | Description |
| Urgency | We act swiftly when local shelters reach critical capacity. |
| Dignity | Every dog, regardless of age or medical condition, deserves a life of comfort. |
| Connection | We prioritize "quality over quantity" in matching dogs with the right families. |
| Local Roots | We are committed to making Medina County a safer place for animals. |
Why the "Longhound" Approach Matters
Small dogs, particularly dachshunds, are often highly sensitive to the noise and concrete flooring of standard shelters. By removing them from these environments and placing them into the Longhound Ranch network, we reduce their trauma and allow their true personalities to shine, making them significantly more adoptable.
